China Urges Immediate Halt to Iran War, Calls for Diplomatic Resolution as Middle East Tensions Escalate

According to international reports, the escalation started when U.S. and Israeli forces launched air and missile strikes on several Iranian military-linked facilities in multiple locations, including areas believed to house strategic infrastructure connected to Iran’s defense capabilities. The strikes, which occurred several days before China’s statement and were publicly reported in the days leading up to March 8, significantly heightened tensions across the Middle East and triggered widespread international concern over the possibility of a broader regional conflict.
Iran responded shortly after the attacks by launching retaliatory missile and drone strikes targeting locations associated with military interests of its adversaries across parts of the region. The exchange of military operations intensified security risks across neighboring territories and raised alarms among global leaders who fear the conflict could disrupt regional stability and international energy markets.
Speaking at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Beijing on March 8, 2026, Foreign Minister Wang Yi stressed that the situation should never have escalated to the current level of armed confrontation. “War should not be the solution to international disputes,” Wang Yi said during the briefing. “The current conflict should never have happened, and the priority now must be to prevent further escalation and return to dialogue.”
Wang Yi further emphasized that respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity must remain a fundamental principle in international relations. He stated that the use of military force risks deepening geopolitical divisions and undermining efforts to maintain peace and security in an already volatile region.
China also urged all parties involved—including Iran, the United States, and Israel—to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could intensify the crisis. According to Wang Yi, diplomatic channels remain the most viable path to resolving disputes and reducing the risk of a prolonged confrontation that could destabilize not only the Middle East but also the wider international community.
Beijing expressed concern that continued hostilities could have far-reaching economic consequences, particularly for global energy markets. The Middle East remains a critical hub for global oil supply, and disruptions caused by military conflict could trigger sharp increases in energy prices and place additional pressure on global economic stability.
As the situation continues to unfold, China reiterated its readiness to support international diplomatic initiatives aimed at de-escalating tensions. The Chinese government called on the international community to prioritize peaceful negotiation mechanisms and to work collectively to prevent the conflict from developing into a larger war with global implications.
