A Swiss national has been officially named a suspect by local police after allegedly insulting the sacred Hindu holiday of Nyepi through a social media post in Badung, Bali, Indonesia. The suspect designation followed an in-depth investigation conducted by regional authorities after public complaints emerged over content considered offensive to religious values.

The incident began on Friday, March 20, 2026, when a cyber patrol unit from the police discovered an Instagram post containing statements perceived as disrespectful toward the observance of Nyepi. The post quickly spread across social media platforms, sparking outrage among the public, particularly within the Hindu community, who regard Nyepi as a deeply sacred day of silence and spiritual reflection.

Following the discovery, investigators launched a digital trace to identify the account owner. Authorities confirmed that the individual behind the post was a Swiss citizen residing temporarily in Badung. Police then gathered digital evidence and interviewed witnesses to establish the context and impact of the content.

Once the suspect’s identity was verified, officers moved swiftly to detain the individual at his residence in Badung. During initial questioning, the suspect admitted to uploading the content. Investigators proceeded with a formal case review to determine whether the actions constituted a criminal offense under Indonesian law.

Based on the results of the case review, authorities concluded that the content contained elements of religious insult and violated existing legal provisions, including Indonesia’s Electronic Information and Transactions Law (ITE Law). Consequently, the individual’s status was officially upgraded from witness to suspect on March 23, 2026.

Police emphasized that the decision to pursue legal action was driven by the need to maintain interfaith harmony and respect for local cultural values. Nyepi, observed by Hindus in Bali, is a day marked by complete silence, restricted activities, and spiritual observance, making any form of disrespect highly sensitive and potentially disruptive to social stability.

Authorities also stressed that law enforcement is applied equally to all individuals regardless of nationality. Foreign nationals residing in Indonesia are required to comply with local laws and cultural norms, including responsible use of social media in public spaces.

This case serves as a reminder to both local residents and international visitors to exercise caution and cultural awareness when expressing opinions online. Law enforcement officials urge the public to better understand local traditions and religious sensitivities to avoid legal consequences and social conflict.
