The global motorsport governing body Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) officially announced the cancellation of two races in the 2026 Formula One calendar, namely the Grands Prix scheduled in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. The decision was released in mid-March 2026 after the security situation in the Middle East deteriorated due to escalating regional tensions and conflict. The races, which were originally scheduled for April 2026, were called off to ensure the safety of drivers, team personnel, event staff, and spectators involved in the international motorsport event.

The Bahrain Grand Prix had initially been scheduled to take place on April 12, 2026, at the Bahrain International Circuit in Manama. Meanwhile, the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix was set to be held one week later, on April 19, 2026, at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit in the city of Jeddah. Both races are traditionally key events in the early part of the Formula 1 season and often attract global attention from motorsport fans, teams, and sponsors.

However, by early March 2026, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East had escalated significantly. Ongoing regional conflict and rising military tensions among several countries in the region raised concerns about stability and safety. The situation prompted international sports organizations and event organizers to reassess the feasibility of holding large-scale global events in the affected area.

Security assessments provided to Formula One management and FIA officials indicated potential risks related to transportation, logistics, and the safety of participants and spectators. Concerns included possible disruptions to international travel routes, the movement of racing equipment, and the security of thousands of fans who would normally attend the race weekend events.

Following consultations with local governments, security authorities, and Formula One management, the FIA ultimately decided that proceeding with the races would pose unacceptable risks under the current circumstances. In its official statement, the organization emphasized that the safety of drivers, teams, officials, and fans must remain the highest priority in any motorsport event.

The cancellation also affects the structure of the 2026 Formula 1 championship calendar. With the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian races removed, the total number of races planned for the season has been reduced. Formula One management is expected to adjust the schedule of subsequent races in order to maintain the continuity of the championship while ensuring safe operations.

For the host nations, the cancellation represents a significant economic setback. Formula 1 Grands Prix are widely recognized as major international sporting events that generate substantial revenue through tourism, hospitality, broadcasting, and global promotional exposure for host cities and countries.

Despite the setback, FIA officials and Formula One organizers stated that the decision was necessary given the current geopolitical environment. They also expressed hope that races in the Middle East, including those in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, could return to the championship calendar in future seasons once the regional security situation improves and conditions are considered safe for international competition.
