Kim Jong Un Expected to Announce Major Policy Direction at North Korea Party Congress in Late February 2026
en01.web.id – North Korea. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is expected to announce major national policy goals at the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) Congress, scheduled to take place in late February 2026 in Pyongyang. The information was reported by international media citing an official announcement from Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), North Korea’s state-run media, which described the congress as the country’s highest political decision-making forum.
According to KCNA, the decision to convene the party congress was made during a meeting of the Political Bureau of the WPK Central Committee held on February 7, 2026, and chaired directly by Kim Jong Un. Kim, who serves as General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea, discussed preparations, organizational matters, and key political tasks to be addressed during the upcoming congress.
“The party congress will serve as an important occasion to review past achievements and set the direction for the party and the state in the next stage,” KCNA quoted from the official conclusions of the Political Bureau meeting. The state media added that senior party officials, military leaders, and representatives of state organizations from across the country are expected to attend the event.
The lead-up to the congress began in early February 2026, when Kim Jong Un conducted a series of internal meetings and inspections of economic and defense-related sectors. KCNA reported these activities as part of political preparations ahead of the congress, aimed at highlighting national achievements amid prolonged international sanctions and economic pressure.
On domestic policy, Kim is widely expected to reaffirm North Korea’s self-reliant economic development strategy, which remains the ideological foundation of the state. Emphasis on industry, agriculture, and major infrastructure projects is anticipated to feature prominently in his policy address, as the government seeks to maintain internal stability despite limited access to foreign trade and investment.
In the area of military and security policy, the party congress is also viewed as a key platform for reinforcing North Korea’s defense posture. Analysts expect Kim Jong Un to stress continued strengthening of military capabilities, including weapons modernization and combat readiness, in response to ongoing security dynamics on the Korean Peninsula.
Regarding foreign relations, the congress is expected to signal Pyongyang’s future diplomatic direction, particularly toward the United States and South Korea, while maintaining closer political and economic ties with Russia and China. As of February 8, 2026, North Korea has not issued any official indication of plans to resume nuclear talks or diplomatic engagement with Washington.
The Workers’ Party of Korea Congress, set to be held in Pyongyang in late February 2026, is considered one of the most significant political events in East Asia this year. Due to North Korea’s highly closed political system, the international community is expected to learn detailed policy decisions only after official statements are released by state media following the conclusion of the congress.
