Email Bomb Threat Triggers Evacuation of 30 Schools in Chandigarh, India

en01.web.id – India. Panic spread across Chandigarh, India, after around 30 schools received bomb threat emails on Thursday (January 29, 2026), forcing authorities to evacuate students and suspend classes as a precautionary security measure.

According to the Chandigarh Police, the bomb threats were sent via anonymous emails to multiple government and private schools across the city during the early hours of the school day. The messages warned of explosive devices allegedly planted inside school premises.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanwardeep Kaur confirmed that police received alerts from school administrations shortly after the emails were discovered.

“We started receiving information from schools early in the morning regarding bomb threat emails. Immediate action was taken to ensure the safety of students and staff,” SSP Kanwardeep Kaur said.

The incident began when school authorities, while checking official email accounts before classes commenced, noticed threatening messages claiming bombs had been planted on campus. Following standard safety protocols, schools immediately contacted police and initiated emergency evacuations.

Police teams, along with the Bomb Disposal Squad, sniffer dog units, and fire department personnel, were deployed to affected locations across several areas, including Sector 15, Sector 20, and Sector 35 of Chandigarh. Each school building and surrounding area was thoroughly searched.

The situation caused significant anxiety among parents, many of whom rushed to schools to collect their children. Traffic congestion was reported near several school zones as authorities worked to maintain order and secure the premises.

After hours of systematic inspection, police confirmed that no explosives or suspicious objects were found at any of the locations. The threats were subsequently declared hoaxes, though officials stressed that such acts are treated as serious criminal offenses.

“No explosive material has been recovered from any of the schools. However, sending bomb threats is a grave offense, and we are investigating the matter thoroughly,” SSP Kanwardeep Kaur stated.

Chandigarh Police have now launched a cybercrime investigation to trace the source of the emails, focusing on digital footprints, IP addresses, and possible links to similar incidents elsewhere. Authorities have also stepped up security at educational institutions as a precaution.

Officials urged the public to remain calm while assuring that student safety remains a top priority. The incident has once again highlighted the growing challenge of digital hoax threats targeting public institutions and the disruption they can cause despite posing no physical danger.
