An armed robbery shocked the alpine resort town of Cortina d’Ampezzo, northern Italy, on Wednesday (January 14, 2026), after a group of gun-wielding criminals stormed a luxury jewellery store on Corso Italia, the town’s main shopping street. The incident sent waves of concern through the normally tranquil and upscale tourist destination.

According to Italian police, two to three armed suspects were involved in the robbery. The assailants entered the Cacciari Salvati jewellery store during business hours and threatened staff with firearms, forcing them to comply. The perpetrators then quickly seized high-value jewellery from display cases and storage areas before fleeing the scene.

No injuries were reported in the incident. However, store employees were left deeply shaken after being confronted at gunpoint. Authorities noted that the operation was executed swiftly and efficiently, suggesting the perpetrators were experienced and well-organized criminals rather than opportunistic offenders.

The robbery occurred on Wednesday morning local time, when Corso Italia was busy with residents and tourists. The street is widely known for its luxury boutiques, hotels, and cafés, and is considered one of the safest areas in Cortina d’Ampezzo, making the crime highly unusual for the region.

After the robbery, the suspects escaped using a vehicle. Police later discovered a car believed to have been used as the getaway vehicle, abandoned a short distance from the town center. Investigators believe the vehicle was deliberately discarded to hinder police pursuit.

Italian law enforcement immediately launched a large-scale manhunt, setting up roadblocks on key exit routes, reviewing CCTV footage, and deploying specialized units to track the suspects. Investigators are also examining possible links to organized criminal networks operating beyond the local area.

Authorities believe the primary motive behind the robbery was financial gain, given the significant value of the jewellery targeted and its potential resale on the black market. Police have not yet disclosed the estimated losses, stating that a full assessment is still underway.

The incident has raised serious security concerns, particularly as Cortina d’Ampezzo prepares to play a key role in hosting events for the Milan–Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. Police confirmed that the search for the suspects is ongoing and urged the public to remain calm while reporting any suspicious information.
