The Arizona Supreme Court building in downtown Phoenix was evacuated after authorities discovered a suspicious package containing homemade explosive material inside the facility, prompting a large-scale emergency response from local and federal law enforcement agencies and forcing the temporary shutdown of surrounding government offices.

The package was found early Monday morning in the mailroom of the State Courts Building, which houses the Arizona Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals Division One. After initial screening by the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS), officers identified several small containers inside the package, two of which tested positive for homemade explosive substances. The discovery immediately triggered emergency security protocols, and officials ordered the full evacuation of the building.

Authorities expanded the evacuation perimeter to nearby government facilities, including the Department of Education, the Office of the Attorney General, and the Department of Administration, as a precautionary measure to protect public safety. The Capitol Mall area was temporarily closed as security forces worked to secure the scene and assess the potential threat.

A joint response team consisting of DPS, the Phoenix Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) led the operation. Bomb technicians conducted extensive sweeps of the premises, while hazardous materials specialists handled the suspicious package with high-risk safety procedures. The device was eventually removed from the building and transferred to a secure location for further examination and safe disposal.

Officials confirmed that no injuries or fatalities were reported during the incident. At the time the package was discovered, no court proceedings were in session, which limited the number of occupants inside the building. Nevertheless, authorities emphasized that the situation posed a serious threat and could have resulted in significant casualties if not addressed swiftly.

As of this report, the sender of the package remains unidentified, and investigators have not yet determined the motive behind the incident. The package carried no return address or identifying information, complicating early investigative efforts. Law enforcement agencies continue to examine surveillance footage, forensic evidence, and delivery records in an attempt to track the source of the explosives.

Due to the security threat, all court operations inside the Arizona Supreme Court building were suspended for the remainder of Monday and were scheduled to resume on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, after officials declared the facility safe for public use.

The incident has intensified concerns over security risks facing public institutions in the United States and reinforced calls for heightened vigilance and protective measures at government facilities. Authorities have pledged to strengthen screening procedures and security protocols to prevent similar threats in the future.
