China’s Military Closely Monitors US Warships Transiting the Taiwan Strait, Maintains High Alert Status

China’s military confirmed on Friday that it had closely monitored United States warships transiting the Taiwan Strait, underscoring that its forces remain on high alert to safeguard national sovereignty and regional stability. The statement came amid heightened tensions between Beijing and Washington over Taiwan and military activity in the strategically vital waterway.

The incident involved two US naval vessels, the guided-missile destroyer USS John Finn and the survey ship USNS Mary Sears, which conducted a routine passage through the Taiwan Strait. The US Navy described the transit as part of its regular operations to uphold freedom of navigation, asserting that the strait constitutes international waters under international law.

In response, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Eastern Theater Command said it had deployed naval and air assets to track and monitor the US ships throughout their passage. According to the PLA, the operation was carried out in accordance with standard military procedures to prevent any potential threat to China’s security.

Beijing criticized the US naval transit as a provocative move that could undermine peace and stability in the region. China has repeatedly stated that Taiwan is an inalienable part of its territory, and views foreign military activities in the strait as highly sensitive and detrimental to its sovereignty claims.

The United States, however, defended the operation, maintaining that the Taiwan Strait is an international waterway open to all vessels. US officials reiterated Washington’s commitment to freedom of navigation and to reassuring regional allies amid growing security concerns in the Indo-Pacific.

The sequence of events began earlier this week when the US ships entered the Taiwan Strait from the south. Chinese military surveillance systems detected the movement, prompting the immediate deployment of PLA forces to shadow the vessels until they exited the strait. No direct confrontation or unsafe encounters were reported during the transit.

Analysts say the episode reflects a recurring pattern of strategic rivalry between China and the United States in East Asia. While such transits are routine for the US Navy, they consistently draw strong responses from Beijing, which considers the Taiwan issue a core national interest and red line.

As of Friday afternoon, the situation in the Taiwan Strait remained stable, with both sides concluding their respective operations without escalation. Nevertheless, the incident once again highlights the fragile security environment surrounding the strait and reinforces its status as one of the most sensitive flashpoints in global geopolitics.
