A deadly passenger train accident occurred in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca after a train derailed while crossing a bridge on Sunday, December 28, 2025, resulting in the deaths of at least 13 people and injuries to no fewer than 98 others, according to official statements released by local and federal authorities.

The train involved in the accident was operating along the Interoceanic Train corridor, a major national infrastructure project aimed at connecting Mexico’s Pacific coast with the Gulf of Mexico. At the time of the incident, the train was carrying approximately 250 passengers, including families, commuters, and onboard personnel, as it traveled through a mountainous area of the region.

Authorities said the derailment occurred when the train left the tracks while passing over a bridge, causing several railcars to fall from the elevated structure. The force of the impact severely damaged multiple carriages, leaving some crushed upon landing and others partially suspended, complicating rescue efforts and increasing the number of casualties.

Emergency services were immediately mobilized following the crash. Firefighters, paramedics, police officers, military units, and civil protection teams were dispatched to the scene, where they worked for hours to extract trapped passengers from the wreckage. The rugged terrain and unstable railcars significantly slowed rescue operations.

The injured were transported to several hospitals across Oaxaca, where medical staff declared an emergency response to accommodate the influx of patients. Health officials confirmed that a number of victims remain in critical condition, while others suffered fractures, head injuries, and internal trauma as a result of the derailment.

Mexico’s transportation authorities announced that the cause of the accident is still under investigation. Preliminary lines of inquiry include possible track defects, structural issues with the bridge, mechanical failure, or operational factors, though officials emphasized that no definitive conclusions have yet been reached.

President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her deep condolences to the families of the victims and pledged that the federal government would conduct a thorough and transparent investigation. She also ordered an immediate review of safety protocols related to the Interoceanic Train project and other rail operations nationwide.

As a precaution, service along the Interoceanic Train route has been temporarily suspended pending technical inspections and safety assessments. The incident stands as one of the deadliest rail accidents in Mexico in 2025, intensifying public scrutiny over rail safety standards and infrastructure oversight across the country.
