UN Condemns US Attacks on Venezuelan Ships in the Caribbean: Over 60 Dead
Since early September 2025, the United States has carried out military strikes on ships operating from Venezuela in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The US says these operations aim to stop drug trafficking and protect maritime security, but the attacks have sparked international controversy.
The targeted ships originated from Venezuelan territory. The strikes took place in international waters near the Caribbean, so Venezuela’s land was not attacked directly, but its ships became the main targets.
UN Secretary-General Volker Türk condemned the attacks, calling them a violation of international law and human rights. According to the UN, lethal force is only justified if there is an immediate threat to human life, which in this case, was not present.
More than 60 people have been killed, including crew members and civilians not directly involved in illegal activities. The high number of civilian casualties highlights the risks of military operations conducted without proper legal assessment.
The attacks have increased tensions between the US and Venezuela. The presence of US warships, fighter jets, and surveillance aircraft in the Caribbean has raised diplomatic concerns. Neighboring countries are urging restraint and adherence to international law to prevent further escalation.
International law experts stress that military operations in another country’s territory must have a clear legal basis. These strikes are considered violations of international conventions and maritime law. In addition to loss of life, the attacks have caused psychological trauma for families and economic disruptions for local fishing communities.
This incident serves as a warning about the conflict between national security objectives and international law. The UN calls for all military actions to prioritize the protection of human life and compliance with international law. Military operations without legal legitimacy can have serious diplomatic and humanitarian consequences.
