Zelenskyy: We Will Only Accept an Agreement That Guarantees National Security
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reaffirmed that his government will not accept any peace agreement that compromises the country’s national security. His statement comes amid growing international pressure as the United States advances a new peace proposal, sparking mixed reactions among European leaders.
Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine remains open to dialogue but rejects any plan requiring Kyiv to concede territory or restrict its military capabilities. He stressed that any agreement must guarantee the protection of Ukrainian citizens, preserve territorial sovereignty, and prevent future acts of aggression by foreign powers.
He also highlighted the importance of international support—particularly from the United States and European nations—while firmly rejecting the notion that Ukraine should accept terms that undermine its dignity just to maintain strategic alliances. “We appreciate the assistance we have received, but the final decisions must be based on Ukraine’s national interests,” he said.
Several European leaders have expressed concerns over the U.S. peace initiative, arguing that the proposal grants excessive advantages to Russia. They warn that such concessions could weaken Ukraine’s long-term position and pose risks to the stability of Eastern Europe.
Meanwhile, Russia claims that the proposal could serve as a foundation for future negotiations, though Moscow has given no indication that it is ready to end its military operations. The Kremlin continues to demand international recognition of the territories it has seized since the invasion began.
This situation has made diplomatic efforts increasingly complex, with various stakeholders trying to balance the urgency of ending the war and the necessity of safeguarding Ukraine’s sovereignty. Zelenskyy reiterated that his government will not bow to any pressure that might jeopardize the country’s future.
With conditions on the front lines still volatile and no concrete agreement in sight, the Russia–Ukraine conflict appears far from resolution. Ukraine maintains that lasting peace can only be achieved if its national security requirements are fully met.
